A Day of Stark Contrasts

Today was the memorial service for a young man who was struck down in the prime of his life. Marc's life long friends, Jack and Nancy lost their 20 year old son Paul to a 15 month battle with Cancer this week. This young man was exemplary in every way. He was a Deans listed student at the University of Florida, was involved in many organizations, played football and ironically received the 2006 Brian Piccolo scholar athlete award. Besides all of that, he was an all around wonderful guy.

There was a service at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville for the students to pay their respects and then here at his family's home, where about 250 people attended to do the same. Many of them spoke so eloquently about Paul. He was such an amazing son, grandson, brother and friend and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. As I listened, I cried for what was not to be. A young man that was ready to make a large impact on the world. I cried for the fragility of life and I cried at the pain that his loving family is and will be enduring. It was just heartbreaking.

About a week ago we had made plans to be with Justin and Judy this evening. When we came back home from the service, we were met by them. We went out and took all of our kids to dinner. Judy is now my daughter too and so Marc, myself and our four kids all enjoyed our time together and as we sat there, I felt like the richest woman in the world thanks to these children (the two bigs and the two littles). This day of stark contrasts is another reminder to live in the moment and treasure them all.

No parent should ever loose a child. It just isn't the natural order of things. As a young adult watching my mom pass away, I knew that wasn't right. I wanted to go right with her. As a parent, I understand what she meant. My heart goes out to Paul & Nancy for their loss.

May his memory forever be a blessing to those who knew him.
